Plastering
More than your average painters in NYC, J P does plaster repair and building of many types of wall systems from traditional plaster over lathe to modern wallboard with mud-jointed seams. Plastering is anything from wall repair from water or other damage to taping up newly installed sheetrock.

Paperhanging
Installing anything from antique, vintage, high-end paper goods to digital one-off prints is one of the things we have done almost from the beginning. Wall paper comes in many different shapes and sizes practically as diverse as the colors that paint comes in you will find that every paper is different and in need of specific handling and experience that we are more than capable of.

Exterior Painting
Despite our name we have always enjoyed working outdoors and have completed many projects that have held up extremely well due to our high attention to detail in preparing a surface for painting. This is especially important to do in exterior painting considering the elements that the paint film will be facing. As respected painters in Brooklyn, we take this very seriously and strive to give you the best in terms of longevity and appearance.

Power Washing
A common component in our arsenal of exterior painting tools is our 2 power washing machines that we keep ready for service in all the warmer months. We not only use these high water pressure cleaning machines for preparation of exterior elements like wood decks and siding, but for use in general cleaning and maintenance of sidewalks, bricks, facades, stucco, driveways, walkways.
Staining
We do both interior and exterior staining of wood. Staining is a way of adding color to the wood to bring out its natural beauty and depth. Stain also provides protection from the U.V. elements found in sunlight. In fact many "clear" coatings actually have a small amount of pigment found in the formula for this purpose.

Varnishing
Varnish is traditionally speaking a mixture of drying oil, resin and solvent. It can be used both indoors and outdoors. But when using the term these days it is most often meant for the use of clear-coating exterior wood, typically like that found on boats. We have a lot of experience in varnishing wood doors found on the exterior of many beautiful brownstones as well as some old classic boats.

Decorative Surface
These are painted surfaces, which encompass walls ceilings moldings, etc. that describe a more casual and looser approach to painting than faux finishing does. Surfaces can range from fine, fussy and detailed to wild, quick and flashy and tend to be a catch all of many diverse forms of painted decoration, and are somewhat less controlled-more abstract as opposed to "Faux" finishing, which is the French word for fake, as in something that is simulated to look like another thing. This other thing could be marble, wood, felt, cloth etc.

Stenciling
This form of decoration has its roots in everything from Pennsylvania Dutch to Ancient Greco-Roman, Asian, and Egyptian cultures to cave paintings. So with its almost 30,000 year history, don't make the mistake of attributing it with one particular style! It has almost limitless possibilities as a custom tool for repeating patterns colors and shapes on Furniture, Lampshades, Ceilings and walls. We have done some really outstanding work in Children's Rooms with matching sets and themes for furniture and murals etc.

Textures
This involves the application of a textural compound applied to a surface of a ceiling or wall, or even trims, when you want to add some interesting, yet subtle layers to a room. As a more elaborate cousin to Decorative Surfaces this technique can serve on its own or as a base layer to a Dec. Surface. We offer some subtle and compelling custom examples of this often underutilized decorative element.

Marine Painting and Varnishing
We offer our expertise in refinishing and repainting of Marine vessels of all types and sizes. We use only the finest in traditional methods and materials of varnishes and yacht enamels.

Historical Finishes
When you consider that not that long ago when a painter came to a home to paint, they prepared the paint to use on the job even before they prepared a surface for painting. You can really appreciate your local paint store and all the work and effort it does save the typical painter. We have taken the time to explore and research some fine and relevant historical mixtures, recipes for use within modern or historical homes. These range from clay paint to milk paints. Now as the demand for no and low VOC paints and so called "Natural Paints" have increased, many exciting products are offered for sale commercially, this are beginning to appear on the market in a really big way. We are excited about this!

Spraying
We have much experience with both HVLP and Airless paint technologies. In the right context with these machines we are capable, of delivering a powerful and economically viable solution for getting your job completed.

Custom Colors/Color Matching
We believe that the color matching software and computers available but often not used or under-used, at almost all hardware stores still cannot match the finest eye and a simple basket of colored paint dispersions. So we have invested in the tools used to offer the customer custom tinted colors at no extra cost. We can custom color match and provide a wealth of special and historical colors that we have on hand. We also employ a fully modern pigment dispensing machine for ease of use and high-accuracy. Draw down samples can be made upon request of all custom colors.

Taping/Drywall
By painting over as many boards as we have, we have come to know the few pitfalls of this very common type of construction. Taping is the filling of the gaps found in the commonly used sheet rock construction method used almost universally today. The small gaps are filled using paper tape and compound. We follow all taping using approved U.S.G methods, practices and procedures for levels of finish. Often you will find poor construction in the form of nail pops and cracks. When we do the taping we inspect the boards for correct installation and structural soundness. As well when installing Drywall we will install them with the correct quality and amount of fasteners, also subscribing to the correct USG building standards as well as local fire and building codes.

Skim coating
Basically skim coating is a new thin veneer on the surface of a substrate whether it is new drywall, or an old plaster wall. Reinforcing this is usually a layer of fiberglass mesh tape or a layer of oil primer underneath the skim coating. All repair work is done first and then the skim coating is done as the final layer just before the primer and paint. Often times why someone "needs" skim coating is more a factor of aesthetics than a matter of necessity. Skim coating can solve the problem of different "peels" in a ceiling or wall surface from appearing irregular. Peel is the terms used for the texture signature of the surface, like the peel of an orange with its particular surface appearance. If many repairs are needed in a wall for instance, then almost by default a wall will be skim coated. Sometime skim coating involves just a light coating of the surface to make it look consistent and smooth. Some cons to Skim coating are that it can be time and labor intensive as well it can produce a lot of dust and clean-up.

Finish and General Carpentry
We also offer full carpentry services as a convenience to our customers. Our philosophy dictates that when we do a job we like to do it right. Well here in the damp northeastern climate, often times doing it right means repairing or replacing rotten wood; windows, skylights, decks, re-hanging doors, replacing rotten wood siding or casings both interior and exterior. As a way of getting the job done under our strict supervision we have employed the same carpenter for 7 years on a part-time basis. For instance when we install exterior wood elements we back prime them with an exterior oil primer. We also use all the soundest techniques and installation practices for a long lasting over-built job.

Wall & Ceiling Repair
This is probably one of the most common services that we perform. Many times leaks, plumbing or electrical holes are the unfortunate reason for getting a painting estimate. We are experts in getting walls and ceilings back to and better than original shape. We employ a series of techniques in making sure that the repair is sound and will last for years. That is why we are so confident that we offer a Full 5 Year Guarantee on all repair work.

Handyman & Cleaning Services
If you have a small job that needs to be done around the home or business, interior or exterior, give us a call. We expertly hang pictures, install shelving, cleaning services, post renovation clean-up. small repairs, carpentry repairs, door installations. We do almost everything expect electrical and plumbing work.

Painter for a Day Program
This is a day based program designed for customers that do not require expert advice on color, problem solving, paint failure, extensive repair work, complicated methods etc. And who have bought their own quality paint, and who just need a fully trained, (basic tools included) experienced painter to show up for a day of 7 ½ hours of work at the customers directions and supervision. This type of job typically does not involve estimates, job progress reports, guarantees, owner supervision. But it does provide a way for someone to become familiar with a professional painting service on a budget.
